Soybean Seed Coat and Cotyledon Crack Detection by Image Processing

Abstract A computer vision system was used to evaluate seed coat and cotyledon cracks in soybeans. White light in the front-lighting mode with a black background for the soybeans was the best condition for acquiring video images of soybeans suitable for subsequent processing. Image processing algorithms were developed using the software supplied with the vision system computer. Crack detection was most successful when seeds were positioned carefully such that the cracked region of the soybean was viewed directly by the camera of the vision system. Using the algorithms developed, 96% of the soybeans with seed coat cracks and 100% of the soybeans with cotyledon cracks were correctly detected from the samples tested.
