An approach for reliability evaluation of HVDC transmission systems using a well-being framework

A probabilistic technique is presented in this paper for evaluating the well-being of HVDC transmission systems. This technique provides the system designer and planner with measures of system well-being in the form of system health and margin in addition to the more conventional risk index. Two performance indices designated as LOLE (loss of load expectation) and LOHE (loss of health expectation) are developed to reflect the degree of system well-being, The health of a hypothetical test system is examined in this paper considering the effects of including spares, common-mode failures and increasing the number of poles.
