How RMC Lonestar's Santa Cruz cement plant dealt with the problem of sulfur dioxide emissions is described. The systematic approach used to learn about the origin of the SO/sub 2/ problem and the experimental projects carried out to collect the data to design a system to control SO/sub 2/ emissions are discussed. The development of a pilot plant dry scrubber for SO/sub 2/ control and the implementation of the ultimate alkaline slurry injection system are reviewed. The system's effectiveness as well as its limitations in controlling SO/sub 2/ are discussed. >
