An Appraisal of Oxytocin in the Induction of Labour: Part 1 The Effectiveness of Amniotomy with or Without Syntocinon

In a prospective study of 1,317 deliveries following induction of labour by amniotomy, the use of Syntocinon was associated with increased post-partum blood loss and an increase in low apgar scores. The incidence of caesarean section was unaffected by the use of Syntocinon, but increased with lag between amniotomy and commencement of Syntocinon.
