Estimation of generators dynamic and controllers performances in open power systems

Following the electricity market opening, new producers are plugging into the network. Therefore it is very important for any system operator to control, at all times, a producer's performances and characteristics. Estimation of parameters from power system measurement is a relatively new and unexplored field. It is complicated by the nonlinear nature of system dynamics and the size of the models. This paper shows a Gauss Newton approach involving trajectory sensitivities to estimate dynamic and controller performances. A theoretical approach of trajectory sensitivity, i.e., the sensitivity of the model response to small variations in parameters or initial conditions, is provided. An example, consisting of a 4-machine test power system, is used to illustrate the estimation algorithm.
