Developmentally Regulated Expression of α‐MSH and MC‐1 Receptor in C57BL/6 Mouse Skin Suggests Functions Beyond Pigmentation a

α -MSH is an endogenous proopiomelanocortin-derived neuropeptide that can act as hormone, neurohormone, neurotransmitter, cytokine, biological response modifier, and growth factor. 1–41 In the skin, α -MSH is understood to primarily control melanogenesis and to exert immuno-suppressive functions. 1–5 In the skin, the α -MSH receptor (MC1R) has been identified and characterized in melanocytes, 1,6
