Control of solids contamination in hydraulic systems — an overview

Abstract Contamination related problems in power hydraulics are not new. Even before the turn of the century, when water was used in a number of municipalities as a source of centralised power, methods of dealing with the problem were mentioned. However, it has only been in the past 25 years that serious investigation and research has been conducted. The efforts and results of the cumulative body of researchers are critically reviewed in this paper with suggestions as to where future work could be concentrated. This paper forms the foundation of a project presently in hand to investigate the problem of contamination in underground mining equipment hydraulics.
