Seeing as a Situated Activity: Formulating Planes*

*Research in this paper grows out of The Workplace Project, a collaborative research project devoted to the analysis of work as situated practice in multiactivity settings which was initiated by Lucy Suchman at Xerox PARC and funded by the Steelcase Corporation. Conversations with other members of the project — Francoise Brun-Cottan, Kathy Forbes, Gitti Jordan, Lucy Suchman and Randy Trigg—have deeply influenced our analysis. A very special debt is owed to Lucy Suchman for demonstrating to us the importance of including material settings in the analysis of human interaction and cognition as situated phenomena.
