The pretunnel method, a new Italian technology for full-face tunnel excavation: A numerical approach to design

Abstract A new analytical method based on the convergence-confinement approach to the design of pretunnel lining is presented. The results obtained with the proposed model are compared with the results obtained with an FEM axisymmetric model, for the geometrical and geomechanical parameters of a real tunnel for a new Italian high-speed railway link currently under design.
