A fatigue design system for backhoe attachment of excavator is presented, which evaluates systematically the fatigue strength of arm and boom structures in the initial design stage of excavator. The system enables designers to carry out fatigue analysis promptly and conveniently following the procedure of fatigue life assessment including fatigue design load generation, transferring to FE model and fatigue life calculation. Correlation between the bending moments applied on the attachment and hot spot stresses at fatigue concerned areas is reviewed through full scale field measurement in order to verify the compatibility of bending moment as the fatigue design load. Maximum and minimum bending moments for excavating and dumping work is determined and transferred to analysis model automatically in the system and fatigue life is calculated from the results of FE analysis. The system is applicable to the optimum design of attachment in view of structural size, thickness and joint location.
