YMCA의 특수성이 스포츠센터에 미치는 영향에 관한 연구

Currently, there is overheated competition between domestic fitness clubs, no matter whether they are public gyms or for commercial purposes, due to the inflow of foreign capital. The purpose of this study was to discuss in which way the specific features of YMCA that has contributed to modem Korean physical education could be applied to modem gyms and to suggest some of the right directions for them, by looking into foreign theories on leadership, one of the YMCA's unique organizational features, the development process of that organization, and the concept and characteristics of fitness club. The findings of this study were as below: First, YMCA is likely to draw criticism because it's getting larger in size and its unique individuality is on the wane, and that organization needs to reinvent itself for successful localization. New programs should be introduced, and service should take precedence over profit. Second, user convenience should be guaranteed and management should be done in a better way. Local residents should be provided more opportunities to get exercise, and new type of programs, such as social education program, should be offered. Third, YMCA's flexible attitude toward sports suggests that commercial gyms should be able to keep up with the changing trend of the sports and leisure industry in terms of fund capabilities. Fourth, one of the keys to YMCA's success is that it has tried to cultivate good leaders. It's urgently needed to foster physical-education administrative professionals who could address people's need for sports and take the initiative in promoting national physical education.
