Abstract As part of an initiative to consolidate the collaborative scientific research base of the Central Laboratories of the Research Councils (CLRC), a call for proposals to form CLRC research networks was issued in 2001. As a result of this process, two such networks were founded in early 2002. The Center for Materials Physics and Chemistry (CMPC) is coordinated by Nic Harrison (CLRC Computational Science Department and Imperial College London), and the Centre for Molecular Structure and Dynamics (CMSD) is coordinated by Chick Wilson (ISIS and University of Durham). The official launch meeting of the latter was held in March 2002 at The Cosener's House, Abingdon.
