A high rate of growth in the proper density of diesel engines has been experienced in the past decade. It is anticipated that the trend will continue with the rate of increase being dependent only on the rate of growth in technology. This paper will review the basic reasons for pursuing increased power density and review some of the requirements for increased technology. The advantages and disadvantages of increased specific output are covered point by point. The results point to lower energy consumption, reduced cost, weight and volume of the product maximum of the manufacturer's capital resources. /GMRL/
