Security is generally regarded as a process and not a product. Antivirus protection is a major component of any network security plan, but it is necessary to ensure that the servers housing the NAVCE software and the network connection it is using to access the Internet are equally secure. It is noted that if any one aspect of the security plan is weak, the rest of the network can suffer. This chapter deals with securing the NAVCE software, the operating system security, regulation of network traffic through firewall technologies, and finally auditing the network for any potentially hostile activity. It discusses various kinds of threats including human, physical and technological that the network require to be protected against. The chapter also describes the importance of documentation so that the data is not lost completely and can be retained. Further, the chapter addresses the particulars of selecting and securing the machine that can host the NAVCE service, as well as steps required to lock down NAVCE in order to create a consistent level of antivirus protection across the entire network.
