Root rot control in South Africa: Past, present and future

SYNOPSIS The different strategies for the control of Phytophthora root rot are discussed, which include the trunk injection technique. Possible improvements for the accurate timing of the injections are considered by monitoring phosphite in the plants and phytoalexins after injection. A total strategy is discussed based on chemical control, resistant rootstocks, cultural practices and disease-free nurseries.
