Monitoring moisture content in Municipal Solid Waste: results of a preliminary test under laboratory conditions

The paper presents the results of the tentative testing of various moisture content monitoring probes in Municipal Solid Waste (MSW). The experimental test was conducted on the basis of a 0.07 m 3 sample of shredded waste subject to compression (up to 130 kPa) and a cycle of water saturation – drainage under laboratory conditions. First results indicate that TDR and capacitive probes are sensitive to volumic variations of moisture content. Further works will be needed to calibrate the response of the latter probes from various types of waste and test conditions.
