Power spectrum analysis as a tool for statistical evaluation of drug effects on electrical activity of brain.

Abstract The technique of power spectrum analysis was used to study the effects of drugs on the ECoG of the cat. The statistical significance of the drug action was determined by making t-tests of the difference in power between pre-drug and post-drug spectra. The first part of the study involved chlorpromazine, diazepam and three other benzodiazepines. Chlorpromazine and Ro5-2092 increased power in the medium frequency range and decreased power in the upper range. Diazepam and Ro5-4556 increased power in both medium and upper ranges, while Ro5-6901 decreased power in these ranges. The second part of the study compared pentobarbital and methyprylon. Pentobarbital increased power in the medium range and decreased it in the upper range; there was a sharp peak in the spectrum at 7 to 8 c/s. Methyprylon differed from pentobarbital by producing no sharp peak in the frequency spectrum.
