A large percentage of both childbearing and nonchildbearing women had experienced a major depression (36% to 40%) at some point prior to their entry into our study. Rates of other psychiatric disorders were substantially lower, yet in the aggregate, these results suggest that psychological suffering was very common in the lives of the women in our study despite the fact that they averaged only about 27 years of age.
