Stresses in thick-walled conical shells

Abstract The radial, tangential and axial wall stresses in a thick-walled cone under internal and/or external pressure are determined. The cone is considered to be “long” such that the end effect does not influence the wall stresses. The reason for studying the wall stresses in the thick-walled cone arose in the design of nozzles for pressurizers and steam generators used in the pressurized-water reactor systems of nuclear submarines and aircraft carriers.
