Mixed mode crack propagation and fracture in concrete

Abstract Results of experiments using the Iosipescu test specimen in which axial compression has been introduced in addition to the shearing loads are reported here. Different crack paths and fracture modes were obtained depending on the presence or absence of axial compression. Computer models (CRACKER) show agreement with the experimental results in predicting the crack initiation angle and path of propagation. The CRACKER program was run using LEFM, the fictitious crack model and this model augmented with shearing stress. All these indicated continued crack propagation in mode I.
