Comparison of power losses in single-phase to three-phase AC/DC/AC PWM converters

In this paper, a comparison of power losses in the conventional single-phase-to-three-phase and single-phase half-bridge plus two-leg three-phase AC/DC/AC PWM converters for low power applications is presented, in which the conduction and switching losses of each semiconductor device are taken into account. Power losses of the two converters employing devices of three different manufacturers are evaluated at different operating conditions of power factor (PF), modulation index (MI), and switching frequency. It is shown that from analysis and simulation results in the case of high MI and PF, the halfbridge rectifier and two-leg inverter gives lower power losses compared with the conventional one of full-bridge rectifier three-leg inverter at the low switching frequency.
