A special type of carbon temperature sensors used in the 6.4 km long superconducting proton ring HERA

Abstract A special type of thin film carbon temperature sensors was developed for the temperature range between 300 K and 4.2 K. They were calibrated in this range at six points. The measured resolution was +-8 mK at 4.2 K, which was limited by the read out electrronics. The long term stability was about −20 mK at 4.2 K. The magnetic field dependence was measured to be less than 0.14 K around 4.2 K for fields up to 7.4 Tesla. The influence of radiation doses up to 10 7 Gy by 3 MeV electrons at 77 K turned out to be small. Results from temperature measurements in 422 Dipols of HERA are also presented.
