The Specification, Design and Development of a Kinetic Energy Tidal Power Generator

The paper covers the research being carried out to determine the feasibility of developing a kinetic energy tidal power generator in the 10 to 50 kW range. The two basic types of devices that can be used to harness the kinetic energy in tidal streams and the prediction of the power output from propeller turbines are discussed. The paper describes the construction and deployment of a 2 metre diameter propeller turbine test unit at a site featuring a tidal stream with a relatively high water velocity. Details of the evaluation of the energy resource, propeller turbines, mechanical transmissions and alternators are provided. The use of maximum power point tracking controllers and a high efficiency alternator to improve the conversion efficiency is explained. Future plans for the development of a prototype kinetic energy tidal power generator are discussed.
