Signal Coding and Sensory Processing in the Peripheral Retina of the Compound Eye

The structure of the dipteran compound eye provides an extensive neuronal network for sensory processing of visual signals. The coding of impinging photons as transmembrane voltage fluctuations provides the means for visual neurons to extract relevant information from the visual surround.
