Splicing in roll change is significant for continuity and productivity in converting systems. At the process of unwinder roll change, tail can be induced because of insufficient accuracy in cut and splice processing. It is the main reasons of wrinkle, tension disturbance, register error. The mathematical model of tail length is presented in this paper. Through a parameter sensitivity analysis, the main factors were identified for reducing tail length. And real-time control scheme for dwindling tail length is proposed. Simulation results show that the proposed tail length model and control scheme is very efficient.
