The Prosody Of Phase In Rotuman

The “phase” alternation in Rotuman isremarkable (and has attracted a good dealof previous attention) for two reasons.First, the shape differences between phasesare quite diverse, involving resyllabification, deletion, umlaut, and metathesis.Second, the phase alternation produces prosodicstructures that are otherwiseunattested in this language, replacing simple(C)V syllables with closed anddiphthongal ones. In this article,I argue that Optimality Theory (Prince andSmolensky 1993) helps to make sense ofboth these observations. I also go on touse these results to support some claimsabout the nature of templates andprosodic circumscription in the theory of ProsodicMorphology (McCarthy andPrince 1986).
