In times past, carousels or merry-go-rounds often had a challenge for the riders. A brass ring was placed just out of reach on a long pole The object was to remain seated on the ride and pluck the ring from its resting place. Timing was critical. The wooden steed upon which you rode had to be going up at just the right moment for you to have a chance to grab the ring and claim the prize that went with it. Not only was this a good marketing ploy to get people to ride again and again in an attempt to capture the brass ring, but the prize that was awarded when the lucky person with the long arms managed to grab it, was usually significant. All that was necessary was to grab the brass ring on your way around. It was not as easy as it looked!
