General characterisation of NOx research tests of vessel units has been presented in this paper. Estimation of difficulties of research cycles realization for main engines, which drive fixed pitch propellers during sea acceptance trials have been presented, as well as remarks upon adequacy of loads recommended by specific tests for loads, which occur during operation of different type ships. These opinions refer to the two issues: the possibility of the performance of the tests of installed engines on the ship, the conformability of the loads of engines, enforced by tests cycles with the loads of engines in the different applications, occurring during a real exploitation. The main and auxiliary engines with various design, size and the character of work are subjected to tests for the non automobile engines, defined within the framework of general of 11. a phase test carrying out on the engine test stands and defined by the rule ISO 8178. For each cycle of tests the rule defines the position of the performance points in the relative values coordinate system: the engine load (rotary torque or power on shaft) and rotational speed. In each of these points the measurements of emission in the conditions of established performance are carried out. For the calculation of total emission, the weight coefficients (scales) given for these points are taken into consideration. Among 14. tests defined by the ISO 8178 rule, with respect to the engines working on the floating units 7 tests can be applied, from what till 5 (E1-E5) to the main engines. Next, the rules of the International Marine Organization (IMO) and Polish Ships Register refer to the CI ship's engines, power above 130 kW and they encompass signified tests C1, D2, E2, E3.
