Reliability and Validity of the NEO-PI-R in Mainland China

Objective: To study the psychometric quality of the revised NEO Personality Inventory (NEO-PI-R) in mainland China. Method: A mandarin Chinese version of the NEO-PI-R was administrated to 909 normal subjects aged 21-81. Results: The alpha coefficients were from 0.77(Agreeableness) to 0.92(Neuroticism).The stability coefficients were from 0.81(Openness) to 0.91(Extraversion). The hypothesized factor structure was clearly identified. The correlation coefficients of Neuroticism and Extraversion between NEO-PI-R and the counterparts in EPQ were 0.74 and 0.82 respectively. The scores of the NEO-PI-R were influenced significantly by the demographic variables of sex, age and education. Conclusion: The NEO-PI-R is suitable for mainland China with some items revised. The researchers suggested to develop age norms for NEO-PI-R.
