Alternative approach to the shape from shading problem

The shape from shading procedure is not the only way to interpret the grey‐scale image of a surface independently on illumination conditions. An alternative approach is reported that considers a new surface as an unknown combination of fragments of know shapes, those shapes offering certain invariances to the illumination changeability.
