Static Synchronous Compensator Improving Dynamic Performance of Wind Plant

This paper investigates the use of a static synchronous compensator(STATCOM) to improve the dynamic performance of a wind plant equipped with Type-I wind turbine generators(WTGs),i.e.,the fixed-speed wind turbines driving squirrel-cage induction generators.A dq decoupled linear PI control scheme is developed to control the STATCOM.Simulation studies are carried out in PSCAD to examine the performance of the wind plant with and without the STATCOM.Results show that the STATCOM significantly reduces the voltage fluctuations caused by wind speed variations and enhances the fault ride-through capability of the WTGs.
