ISTRODUCTIOS Since Stroebe in 1895 (82, p. 405) pointed out that glionias are neoplasms of another nature than sarcomas and other tuniours of the brain, little was done to clear this coinplicatetl field until about fifteen years ago. But since that time the pathological anatom? of the ceutral iiei*vous sp te iu has u i i d e ~ golie a caizeful stndr and admirable contributions have been delivered b~ iimiierous authors. In 1926 the subject had matured to sucli a degree that a classification of the glionias was ventured by Bailey and Cushing (2,. But also after this most important contribution had appeaiwl much disagreement remained. Iiomeyer, during t h e last f ire years o r so the various workers hat-e come to an agreement regaiding many of the essential questions, and i t seems that the authors from no^ 011 will use a iiiore uniforiu teimiiio1og-y than before. One i s impressed by the 1-apicl progress of this particular line of science during the last few years. As an example i t may be mentioned that previous to 1923 when Bailey and Cushing started out to make an intensive study of the gliomas, the only subdivision these authors had made w-as into solid gliomas, cystic gliomas and gliomatous cxsts (7, p. 107). Some of the gliomas had, homevei., been described p~eviousl-\-.
