Turbine wheel design for Garrett advanced variable geometry turbines for commercial vehicle applications

This paper describes the design and tests of a turbocharger turbine wheel for modern commercial diesel vehicle applications. The requirements of such applications are first discussed. The aerodynamic and mechanical designs of the wheel are then described and the test results of the wheel in a Garrett Advanced Variable Nozzle Turbine (AVNT) are presented. For such turbines, turbine wheel high cycle fatigue (HCF) is a serious threat to survive of the wheels. A right-at-the-first-time result was achieved through a combination of experiences, state-of-art simulations and experimental technologies.
