Study on Self-Organized Criticality of Power System Blackouts in China

Based on the concept of self-organized criticality (SOC) and fractal and by analyzing power system blackouts in China from 1981 to 2002, the characters of SOC of domestic power system blackouts are revealed, and the scale-frequency models for blackouts occurred in nationwide power grid as well as in Northeast China, Central China and Northwest China power grids are constructed. Through the research on how to describe the SOC of power system by use of sand pile model, a conception is proposed, that is, the real-time dynamic sand pile models for smaller regional or provincial power grids are established to form a sand pile group model by which the nationwide power grid can be simulated.
