Efficient Mobility Management of Earth Terminals for Low Earth Orbit (LEO) Satellite Systems

Efficient handover management is essential for next generation LEO (Low Earth Orbit) satellite systems, since handovers should take place frequently and are likely to lead to overload traffic of the systems. The purpose of this paper is to propose a new handover management method with minimum number of binding updates of location information of earth terminals. The effectiveness of the proposed method is evaluated and the management traffic by the proposed method is proved much smaller than those of conventional management methods. Thus, the management traffic can be made negligibly small by the proposed method and the proposed method will contribute to larger traffic handling capacity and better QoS (Quality of Service) in traffic transfer of the future LEO systems.
