Successful ablation of iatrogenic intraoral hypertrichosis post mandibular reconstruction using a thermolysis hair epilation technique.

Ablative fractional CO2 laser therapy creates columns of destruction down to the dermis, called microscopic treatment zones, followed by a re-epithelialization process. Therefore, this therapy is usually used to treat scar remodeling through the wound healing process or to enhance the penetration of topical agents. The mechanism of action of fractional CO2 laser therapy in nail dystrophy is not known, but we hypothesize that tissue ablation and the remodeling process stimulate rejuvenation of the abnormal nail bed. Moreover, penetration of topical steroid into the nail bed or matrix was possible through the multiple columns created by the laser treatment. Therefore, topical application would be expected to be more effective despite the presence of hard keratin containing a disulfide bond in the nail plate.
