Abstract To overcome the difficulty of directly applying the shear strength equation for unsaturated soil to practical engineering, we used the simplified shear strength equation in conjunction with double-curve fitting methods to analyse the stability of unsaturated expansive soil slope, and to evaluate the effect of matrix suction, stratification and cracks on the stability of unsaturated expansive soil slope. The results of analysis and comparison help us better understand the reasons of landslides in the upper layers of expansive soil slope.
