Laborisch algorithm for chemical hazard evaluation in research laboratories: updating to European Regulation n: 1272/2008 and implementation for safety risk assessment

Mathematical estimation model can be used to a first evaluation of chemical risk in the workplace. This paper proposes an implementation of the LaboRisCh algorithm for the estimation of the chemical risk for safety in association with the risk to health and its updating in accordance with the provisions of CE n: 1907/2006 (REACH) and CE n: 1272/2008 (CLP) Regulations. LaboRisCh algorithm assigns numerical values to a set of parameters, it processes synthetic indices and then it defines the level of risk as “irrelevant” or “not irrelevant” for health, in relation to a single operator or to a homogenous group of exposition. For each chemical, the calculation of the risk index considers a factor representing its intrinsic hazard, which is established on the basis of health risk phrases (R phrases). The intrinsic hazard of chemicals has now been replaced with new hazard indications (H) according to CLP Regulation. For the safety risk, the algorithm estimates the risk as “low” or “not low” for safety through a qualitative evaluation that considers the associated hazard indications, the conformity of equipments, facilities and specific work conditions. LaboRisCh algorithm is a complete tool for the chemical risk evaluation for health and safety, easy to use and updated in accordance with EU directives.
