Water movement in porous building materials—I. Unsaturated flow theory and its applications

Abstract General aspects of water movement in building materials are considered. The thermodynamic criteria of equilibrium between pore water and a reservoir are described. Then the equations of flow in unsaturated porous media and some solutions are discussed. The account emphasizes the applicability of certain concepts of soil physics in building science. Computed results are included for steady flow through a porous wall and into a semi-infinite slab.
