The generic evaluation tool for the LHCb event builder network upgrade

LHCb has proposed an upgrade in 2018 to allow operate at a higher luminosity. In order to improve the trigger efficiencies, all sub-detectors will be readout at 40 MHz and data will be sent to a large processing farm which performs event building and filtering. The event builder network will need to provide an aggregate bandwidth about 32 Tb/s. In this paper, we will describe the potential network solutions with different network technologies and topologies, and the different DAQ schemes as well. Demonstration and verification is critical to build such a large network. An generic test tool and methodology is needed to compare the performances. In this paper, we will describe our event builder network benchmarking tool. Several tests have been done using this tool in our lab, the results of the performance tests will be described in this paper.
