Waterborne diseases.

Waterborne diseases, by definition, are those that are transmitted by ingestion of contaminated water. Important waterborne diseases include diarrhoeal diseases, cholera, shigella, typhoid, hepatitis A and E, and poliomyelitis. Diarrhoeal diseases alone account for an estimated 3.6% of the global burden of disease (DALYs), and are responsible for of 1.5 million deaths (2012). It is estimated that 58% of that burden in lowand middle-income countries – 842 000 deaths per year, including 361 000 in children under five – is attributable to unsafe water supply, inadequate sanitation and lack of hygiene.13
