Measurement and theory of mode hopping in external cavity lasers

Mode hopping phenomena in external cavity lasers are experimentally characterised. Transition rates varying over seven orders of magnitude with increasing feedback and a sensitive dependence on feedback phase are observed. The results are explained using a simple potential theory.
