Comparison of Different Interpolation Methods For Motion Compensated Hybrid Video Coding

Some hybrid video coding standards are based on motion compensated prediction. For the motion compensated prediction purpose, displacement vectors with fractional pel resolution are used.In order to estimate and compensate fractional pel displacements, the image signal has to be interpolated. The most popular and simplest interpolation method is the bilinear interpolation.Recent approaches like H.26L propose cubic convolution interpolation.By analzing and comparing these different methods, this paper educes some advantage and disadvantage of each method, and confirms these results through experiments.
