Granulocytic sarcoma of the orbit

Granulocytic sarcoma is an uncommon localized tumour mass composed of granulocytic precursor cells. The association of the lesion with acute leukaemia or myeloproliferative disorders has been noted since many years. The diagnosis of granulocytic sarcoma has frequently been a problem for the pathologist because of the relatively immature nature of tumour cells. Orbital localisation of granulocytic sarcoma is rare. Clinical findings, diagnostic problems and management of an orbital granulocytic sarcoma observed in a girl, the first one referred to our orbital clinic since 1975, are discussed.
