A preliminary survey of control technology for asbestos removal was conducted at Baseline Junior High School, Boulder, Colorado in August, 1984. The project was part of the Boulder Valley School District asbestos-control program, supervised by a specially designated manager. Engineering controls consisted of a three-component detoxification unit for worker clean up, plastic barriers to seal off the work area, a negative air unit to maintain the work area under a slight negative pressure, and the use of wetting agents that were added to the water spray to improve the coalescence of the fibers before removal. The author concludes that the asbestos control program of the Boulder Valley School District appears to be well planned and executed.
