FortPort: an environment for the development of parallel Fortran

Abstract The rapid advances in technology that have resulted in the proliferation in multiprocessor systems have not been matched with a corresponding development in parallel software engineering. There is an obvious need to provide users of these multiprocessor systems with flexible development environments that will support both the development of new parallel codes and the transformation of dusty deck codes to parallel form. This paper reports on a sub-project of the Mathematician's Devil which addresses the problems associated with dusty deck codes. The paper presents an overview of the proposed FortPort system commenting on the basic approach adopted and on the current project status.
