Lint Cotton Cleaners with Notched Grid Bars

ABSTRACT AN experiment was conducted comparing the cleaning performance of standard plain-edged lint-cleaner grid bars to bars whose leading edge had been notched. The experiment was run through the entire 1979-crop season and included both first and second pick cotton. Average lint turnout for the notched-edge bars was 32.9 percent versus 31.6 percent for the plain-edged bars. Average classer grade was 41 for the notched versus 40 for the plain-edged bars. A constant input weight of 680.4 kg (1,500 lb) of seed cotton/bale would have resulted in 8.8 kg (19.5 lb) more lint per bale using the notched-edged grid bars. 8.8 kg (19.5 lb) more lint per bale results in an increase in value of $7.30/bale for notched-edged bars when calculated using the difference in grade between plain- and notched-edged bars and 1979 Government cotton loan prices.
