From Simple Electrolyte Solutions Through Polymer Electrolytes to Superionic Rubbers: Some Fundamental Considerations

A general discussion is presented for the conductivity–viscosity and viscosity–temperature relationships in polymer electrolytes in the context of systematizing the efforts to obtain higher ionic conductivities at ambient temperatures. Topics discussed include: the Walden rule, glass–rubber and rubber–melt transitions, the strength–fragility concept, the Vogel–Fulcher–Tammann and Williams–Landel–Ferry equations, the chelation effect and the decoupling of ionic transport from the structural relaxation processes. © 1998 Society of Chemical Industry
