Analysis of code-switching in Gibraltar

AN ANALYSIS OF CODE-SWITCHING IN GIBRALTAR REALIZA UN ANALISIS DETALLADO DE LOS FACTORES SOCIALES E INDIVIDUALES QUE EXPLICAN EL COMPORTAMIENTO LINGUISTICO BILINGUE DE LA COMUNIDAD DE HABLA DE GIBRALTAR. EL HABLA COTIDIANO DE LOS GIBRALTARENOS CONSISTE EN UNA MEZCLA DE CASTELLANO, INGLES, Y UN SUBSTRATO LEXICO LIMITADO DEL ITALIANO, ARABE, HEBREO, PORTUGUES Y MALTES. LOCALMENTE SE LE DENOMINA YANITO. EL TRABAJO DE CAMPO DE LA PRESENTE TESIS SE REALIZO EN 1987-1992. LOS DATOS PROVIENEN DE CUATRO FUENTES: ENTREVISTAS ESPONTANEAS Y ESTRUCTURADAS, OBSERVACION-PARTICIPACION, TEXTOS ESCRITOS PUBLICADOS, Y DIARIOS LINGUISTICOS. LAS CUATRO SE UTILIZAN PARA LLEVAR A CABO EL ANALISIS DE ALTERNANCIA DE LENGUAS DESDE TRES PERSPECTIVAS DIFERENTES: SITUACIONAL, CONVERSACIONAL, Y SINTACTICO. LA ALTERNANCIA DE LENGUAS SE INVESTIGA CON UNIDADES MAYORES QUE LA ORACION (ALTERNANCIA INTER-ORACIONAL) Y CON UNIDADES ORACIONALES (ALTERNANCIA INTRA-ORACIONAL). SE TIENEN EN CUENTA TRES ENFOQUES: (A) LAS SITUACIONES EN LAS QUE SE UTILIZA ALTERNANCIA DE LENGUAS EN CONVERSACIONES BILINGUES, CONSIDERANDO LOS SIGNIFICADOS COMPARTIDOS ASI COMO LOS QUE SE NEGOCIAN; Y (C) LAS RESTRICCIONES QUE PREDICEN LA ALTERNANCIA DE DOS LENGUAS DENTRO DE UNA ORACION. SE ADOPTA UNA POSICION TEORICA EN RELACION AL PROBLEMA DE LA IDENTIFICACION DE CASOS VERDADEROS DE ALTERNANCIA DE LENGUAS EN CONTRAPOSICION CON LOS FENOMENOS DE PRESTAMOS U OTROS TIPOS DE INTERFERENCIAS ENTRE LAS DOS LENGUAS. UN ALTO NIVEL DE COMPETENCIA LINGUISTICA EN INGLES Y CASTELLANO ES REQUISITO POR PARTE DEL HABLANTE INDIVIDUAL PARA PODER CLASIFICAR UN CASO DE MEZCLA DE LENGUAS, COMO UN EJEMPLO DE ALTERNANCIA DE LENGUAS INTRA-ORACIONAL. LOS RESULTADOS DEL ANALISIS SITUACIONAL DE LA ALTERNANCIA DE LENGUAS DEMUESTRAN QUE EL INGLES ES LA VARIEDAD PRESTIGIOSA EN GIBRALTAR; MIENTRAS QUE EL CASTELLANO Y LA ALTERNANCIA DE LENGUA GOZAN DE UNA VALORACION DOBLE (COVERT PRESTIGE).
