A scientific approach to engineering design

Abstract Current developments of a scientific approach to design are outlined. It is shown than in order to establish a scientific theory of design, the following aspects need to be studied and covered: the designer, the activity, the object, the context in which engineering design takes place, and the context of use of the resulting technical system. The current state of such theory is presented, together with discussions of related literature. Design science is brought into connection with necessary development of computer aids.
